The main objective of the meeting was to provide a platform for experts to deliberate, gather comments, inputs and provide recommendations that will inform two studies being prepared for the Southern Africa Region; as well as, to ensure their relevance to policymakers and other relevant stakeholders in Southern Africa in the context of building back better post-Covid-19.
Workshops - Policy toolkits to stream MSME formalization and inclusive delivery of formalization services
In partnerships with the Government of The Gambia, the Government of Kenya and UN Country Teams, two workshops were organized on enhancing MSME formalization and its contribution to MSME resilience. The workshops received over 300 participants, including the Vice President of The Gambia, the Senior Advisor of the President of Kenya, policymakers and MSME entrepreneurs. Four reports were also delivered to facilitate the formulation of coherent policy environment conducive for MSME formalization
The webinars aimed at raising awareness of the role of entrepreneurship policies in the MSME resurgence and of UNCTAD's Entrepreneurship Policy Framework. Bridging gaps between theory and practice is essential to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. To this end, public policies are the formal means for landing obligations embeded in legal frameworks, as well as those voluntary commitments from different sources at the national and international level. Policies allow the cohesion and articulation of strategies to undertake concrete actions with impact on the collective welfare.
The initiative aims to improve financial literacy in the MSMEs and to facilitate their access to finance and financial inclusion, including to financial aid in the post COVID-19 resurgence.

The objective of the National Workshop of Bangladesh is to enhance the knowledge and capacity of the stakeholders on MSME development to foster a favourable ecosystem for financial inclusion and sustainability in Bangladesh, mainly through strengthening MSME clustering and digital financial solutions for MSMEs. The workshop also aims to enhance the resilience of MSMEs in Bangladesh to mitigate the economic and social impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and facilitate MSMEs’ contributions to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
